The Congressional Art Competition is an annual event facilitated by the congressional offices. Initiated by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, the event is a nationwide competition that allows high school students from all 50 states, the District of Colombia and U.S. territories to showcase their artistic abilities. Art can be presented in a variety of media, including photography, sketching, and paint.
On May 28, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann recognized the Sixth District winners of the 2009 Congressional Art Competition.
Sophomore Abby Kapler from Woodbury High School was awarded first place. As the winner, Ms. Kapler will receive up to three round-trip tickets from Southwest Airlines to Washington, D.C. for the Congressional Awards Ceremony in late June. Ms. Kapler’s artwork, a mixed media watercolor, acrylic and tissue paper design of a blue dress on a seamstress stand, will hang in the Capitol tunnel system with the winning entries from other congressional districts across the country. Thousands of congressional staff and millions tourists pass by the display area on their way to the United States Capitol every year. Ms. Kapler is also eligible for a $1500-per-year admission scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, Georgia.
Three other pieces were also recognized: First Runner-Up: Samantha Mitzel, Foley High School; Second Runner-Up: Caroline Stringer, Cathedral High School; Third Runner-Up: Elizabeth Rotty, Woodbury High School. These pieces will be on display in Congresswoman Bachmann’s offices.
