Thank You for Another Great Health Care Town Hall
I want to thank everyone who came out to my health care town hall meeting in Saint Cloud this past weekend. It was another great discussion about this important issue and I really appreciate the thoughtful questions and comments from those who attended.
It is so important that we engage in a full and serious debate about the issues involved in health care reform. Last week, when the President spoke before a joint session of Congress in his televised address on health care, he stated unequivocally that his door is open to discuss these issues. And, I applaud him for taking these first steps toward a serious, bipartisan discussion about health care. In fact, I have written him to ask for a meeting to discuss the many alternatives to the government-run health care plans that are being rushed though Congress, such as my Health Care Freedom of Choice Act. I am hopeful that we can cut through the politics and give the American people the thoughtful consideration of this critical matter that they deserve.
A Victory for the Taxpayers in the Census
Last week, ACORN again made some not-so-savory headlines. First, FBI and state authorities arrested 11 in South Florida for voter registration fraud. Then, a video became public showing ACORN workers in Baltimore giving advice to a couple they knew to be a pimp and prostitute on how to evade tax laws, get government grants for their prostitution ring, and set up their “business.” Finally, yet another video became public showing ACORN workers in Washington, D.C. also giving advice on illegal activities.
For months, I have been calling on the U.S. Census Bureau to sever its ties to ACORN given that it has been investigated, indicted, and forced into consent decrees in more than a dozen states for criminal voter registration fraud activities. Finally, with the release of these videos, the Census Bureau has found ACORN to be so untrustworthy that it has severed its ties with the organization for the 2010 Census.
I had written the Census Bureau again last week when these videos were released to reiterate my request that ACORN be removed from its census partnership program. I also wrote the IRS to ask for an investigation of their tax exempt status, to the Speaker of the House to ask for a Congressional investigation of ACORN’s activities, and to the Department of Housing and Urban Development to ask that it be debarred from HUD programs.
I am pleased that the Census Bureau has finally severed its ties with ACORN, but I will continue to work to see that this organization is no longer eligible for millions in your tax dollars.
